There are a lot of good things about this diet that can indeed help you lose weight. The focus on eating bananas for breakfast means that you’ll be eating breakfast regularly everyday if you follow this diet. If that is an improvement for you (i.e. if you sometimes miss breakfast right now), you’ll be jumpstarting your metabolism properly and that will certainly help with your weight loss goals.
Additionally, bananas contain a significant amount of fiber relative to their size. That means that eating one or two of them for breakfast will allow you to feel full for longer periods of time while also utilizing the power of one of those fibers (starch) to help your body burn through more fat faster. So from that point of view, increasing the number of them in your diet at the expense of less healthy foods is also a very good thing to do.
That being said, there is a cautionary note to this tale as well and it comes in the form of the unrestricted lunch and dinner. The Japanese author of this diet perhaps didn’t realize how much more the average American eats versus the average Japanese person, but an appropriate edit for the audience across the Pacific may be to say that you can eat what you want for lunch and dinner within reason. If you are a chronic overeater, you’ll still need to cut down on that problem. Two reasonably sized meals for lunch and dinner will compliment the morning bananas quite well and really give you a chance to make some gains when you are on this diet.
